These BBQ black bean burgers are by far our favourite veggie burgers! They’re really hearty and they hold up well on a BBQ so they’re perfect for summer parties.
Ingredients
Black bean patties
- 1 can black beans (drained and rinsed)
- 1 cup cooked rice (any kind works)
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1 onion (diced)
- 1 clove garlic (crushed)
- 1/2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tsp paprika
- 2 tsp cumin
Burger toppings
- 6 burger buns
- cheese*
- sliced tomato
- lettuce (we used Cos)
- bbq sauce
- mayo or mustard
Servings: burgers
Instructions
- Add all the patty ingredients except the flour to the food processor and blend until everything is well mixed. Slowly add the flour while the food processor is on the slowest setting and blend until it is mixed in.
- Put the mixture in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, if you don't have time for this you can omit this step but your patties may be slightly more sticky and difficult to form.
- To make the patties take 1/2 a cup of the mixture and roll into a ball, flatten the ball and shape into a round patty about 1.5 cm thick, this will make around 6 patties. If you prefer your patties thinner then use 1/4 of a cup of mixture.
- Heat a tbsp of olive oil in a pan on high heat. Place the patties in the pan and brown them for 2 minutes on each side. Turn the heat down to medium and cook for 10 minutes, flipping regularly. Turn the heat down further if they look as though they might be starting to burn.
- Toast the buns and assemble your burgers!
